1. When was the moment you realized you had a passion for jewelry design?
Growing up in a family of jewelers and having jewelry as a main topic of conversation, my passion for jewelry design was developed at a very early age by always wanting to join the conversation and have a say in the matter. My passion then grew throughout my childhood as I learned more and more about the core of the business, while working part-time in my family’s business after school.
2. You’ve mentioned before that J By Boghossian Jewelry is a family business, what is it like to be working with your parents?
I always hear “You work with your family? I could never do that!”. So many people think that their family dynamics just could not transfer to the workplace. Working with family members does presents a unique set of challenges however it also makes you develop a very strong bond beyond the regular one. Some of the best things about working with family is the familiarity you have with one another, knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses, having someone around that you can really trust and being able to travel together for jewelry exhibitions (mixing both fun and business). Also, family gives you the motivation to be the best version of yourself.
3. How do you source your stones? What is the process and how much time does it take to create a piece of jewelry?
It’s all about finding the best diamonds available to meet customer’s requirements and expectations while working within their budget. We make sure our diamonds sourcing is ethical and responsible meaning that the diamonds are obtain ensuring the safety and integrity of the workers and natural resources. The 4Cs – color, clarity, cut and carat weight- are the globally accepted standards for assessing the quality of a diamond.
The Initial step in the jewelry process is to develop the sketches, discuss the gems and materials that will be used. Once the jewelry design is approved, the next step is the creation. The jewelry design is created using a computer software and then the wax model can be printed on a 3-D printer. This enables us to view the jewelry in three dimensions before casting it. This wax is more than just a model it becomes the actual piece through lost-wax casting. After the wax is casted, the design is transformed through metals and colored gemstones. The custom jewelry casting is sanded and polished, removing any rough or dull areas. In the workshop, craftsmen use traditional skills and techniques to complete any details of the jewelry design, including engraving and setting gemstones.
Depending on the piece, 1-2 weeks is the average time frame to create a custom piece of jewelry.
4. How do you think your childhood shaped you into the creative you are today?
Having been exposed to art from a very early age, from regular outlets such as: painting, piano, ballet… helped me a lot with my creativity, imagination and expressiveness. Hence, during my childhood art has always been for me a mean of self-expression. Jewelry falls just under that whether it’s while designing a piece or wearing one, it’s a form of self-expression and reflects your personality and style.
5. How do you think women’s relationship with jewelry has changed over the years?
Since ages jewelry has been considered the most prized possession by many.
Jewelry is the most transformative accessory you can wear. Every year brings a new wave of fashion. Earlier women would wear their chunky jewelry only on occasions, not on a daily basis. Now-a-days, we’re seeing more and more women opt out of buying bulky jewelry and going with lightweight, durable and minimalist jewelry. Easily stackable, dainty and easy to wear jewelry have taken the jewelry industry by storm.
As the decades come and go, so do many fashion and jewelry trends. However, clothing fashion may vary from nation to nation but it’s only the jewelry fashion which is universal.
